Making a Big Impact: West Seattle Comes Together for Beyond the Cart Recycle Event

A group of nine people pose outdoors near a "Clothing and Textiles" donation sign, wearing casual and safety vests, with a truck and trees in the background.

Our latest Beyond the Cart Recycling Event was one for the books! A huge thank you to the 503 residents who showed up ready to give their hard-to-recycle items a second life. Because of you, an incredible amount of reusable and recyclable materials stayed out of the landfill—and that’s something worth celebrating.

We also heard loud and clear how much our volunteers made a difference. So many of you shared kind words about the friendly faces helping unload cars, answer questions, and keep things running smoothly. To our volunteers: you are the heart of this event, and we’re so grateful.

Here’s a quick snapshot of the day:

  • 84% of participants came from single-family homes, with 11% from apartments/condos and 5% from townhomes
  • Most common items collected: appliances & electronics, shredded paper, and batteries/lightbulbs
  • Least common: propane canisters and clothing/textiles
  • And a big win—we saw a 50% reduction in foam collected, likely reflecting less Styrofoam packaging overall

This event continues to show what’s possible when a community comes together with intention. Thank you for showing up, pitching in, and helping make West Seattle a little greener.
