Discovery Shop's 24th Anniversary
Party like it’s 1990! The Discovery Shop will celebrate its 24th anniversary Saturday, November 22 with refreshments and a special Buy One, Get One Free sale on all clothing. While you won’t find any MC Hammer pants popular when the store first opened, you will find lots of quality, gently used men, women and children’s clothing as well as collectibles and housewares. In the same West Seattle location since opening in 1990, the Discovery Shop is a resale store with all profits benefiting the America Cancer Society. It is staffed entirely by dedicated volunteers (currently 74 of them) who do everything from sorting and cleaning donations to ringing sales and tracking bookkeeping spreadsheets. To date, the store has raised almost 2 million dollars for cancer research and programs such as Road to Recovery (rides to treatments), patient lodging assistance and a free program for teenage cancer patients to help them cope with treatment and the side effects that may change the way they look. How long ago was it that the store rang up its first sale? Well, it’s the same year Microsoft released Windows 3.0, Mariners pitcher Randy Johnson threw a no-hitter in the Kingdome where the Seahawks also played and the cult hit Twin Peaks premiered on TV. It was also the year in which smoking was first banned on all domestic flights. “With the continued support of the West Seattle community, we are looking forward to another 24 years selling quality, unique donated items. But most importantly, providing hope for a cure,” says Shop Chair Winni Field. “Thanks in part to the Discovery Shop and American Cancer Society, 14 million cancer survivors are celebrating birthdays this year!” Discovery Shop is located in the West Seattle Junction at 4535 California Ave SW. ]]>
