The Fun Begins When We Close the Streets

Art Walk + West Seattle Summer Fest!
July 12th + July 13th – 15th
The Fun Begins When We Close the Streets

The West Seattle Art Walk is doing something extra special for the July 12th Art Walk, also known as Summer Fest eve! They issued a call for artists to create chalk art on the streets in the Junction and have selected 11 artists. Here’s a sampling of the artwork of the artists you’ll meet this Thursday. Artists will be laying down chalk from 6-9pm. There will also be chalk for kids to color the streets.

Come out for Art Walk and make sure to join us for this interactive art experience!

Also happening during Art Walk is the popular Bubbleman. Check out all the bubbly fun at the intersection of California Ave SW and SW Alaska St 6:30 PM

While you’re in the streets for Art Walk, make sure you swing by the West 5 for their 15 Year Anniversary. The Yada Yada Big Band will be throwing down some tasty tunes 7 PM to 9 PM.

We’re not giving too much away, but you may also want to stay in the Junction for a surprise in the streets – 7 PM.

While you’re at Summer Fest watch for the new SOL (Save Our Lots) Junction Pale. Brewed by award-winning Elliott Bay Brewing, you’ll find this a refreshing brew to quench your festival thirst. You’ll find #SOL at the Beer Garden, Elliott Bay and The Beer Junction.

We’ll have plenty of music throughout the festival, including buskers, live music at Verity Credit Union and other pop-up locations.

Check out music from the full line-up on the Summer Fest band page. Find out more about the music line-up on the official Summer Fest website, Summer Fest Facebook page, on Twitter, on Instagram and on Snapchat wsjunction.

Summer Fest Celebrates its 35th Year since 1982

The West Seattle Junction is celebrating its 35th year of Summer Fest this weekend! The celebration has expanded greatly from its humble beginnings as a merchant side walk sale in 1982 to a three-day extravaganza filled with shopping, live music, dining, beer gardens, and family fun. Reflecting upon its first year in existence, let’s look at some facts from pre-Amazon Seattle in 1982.

  • The average price for a single-family home in King County was around $82,000.
  • Columbia Center officially “breaks ground” on construction, becoming the tallest building in Seattle.
  • The Seattle Seahawks experience a shortened season in their 7th year due to the NFL players 57-day strike; demanding members receive a higher portion of the league’s gross revenue.
  • The George Benson Waterfront Street Car Line begins operating two reclaimed Australian street cars along the Elliot Bay waterfront between Pier 70 and Main Street.
  • Body of Wendy Coffield, the first victim of the infamous Green River Killer, is found in the Green River near Seattle.
  • Minimum wage in the State of Washington is $2.30 an hour, lower than the federal minimum wage of $3.35 an hour.
  • The Space Needle holds its first annual New Year’s Eve Celebration.
  • The 5th Starbucks location is opened in the University District at 4555 University Way NE.
  • The average household income in King County was $24,300 per year.

Some of our recommended highlights are the famous Easy Street Records sale – there’s always plenty for everyone! Zamboanga has imported clothing from around the globe. Fleurt and City Mouse offers everyday clothing and decor for gift giving all-year round.

Busk at Art Walk & Summer Fest, 2017

Summer Fest & Art Walk Dates and Times:

Thursday, July 13th 6pm – 9pm (Summer Fest Eve/Art Walk night)

Friday, July 14th 11am – 6pm

Saturday, July 15th 11am – 6pm

Sunday, July 16th 10am – 5pm

The organizers at Summer Fest invite you to join one of Seattle’s most vibrant street parties of the year. Buskers of many types perform at Art Walk and Summer Fest each year. We welcome performances with instruments and tools ranging from acoustic instruments, performance art, odd instruments, puppets, bubbles to magicians. Buskers enrich the already busy streets at the festival by adding to the overall festive feeling.

During Art Walk (July 13th) you may set up on the street between SW Oregon and Edmunds between the hours of 6pm to 9pm for 90 minutes at a time.  You may place a tip jar on the street. There is no information booth manager at Art Walk.

There are two locations at Summer Fest (July 14th-16th) where performers can entertain the crowds for 90 minutes at a time.

Due to the crowds, amplified music is not permitted. All Summer Fest performers are required to wear a performer’s name tag and log into the official busker book.

You may place a tip jar on the street. To perform at Summer Fest, visit the information booth manager who is located at the info booth. You’ll find the info booth at the cross section of the “All Walk” at California Ave and SW Alaska St.

Busker spots are awarded on a first come, first serve basis. Any busker who plays outside of the designated spots or performs outside of the rules will be removed by festival staff.
