Junction Plaza Park Breaking Ground Celebration Today!

junc_plaza_dev_perspectives2The West Seattle Junction has it all: friendly retailers, delicious food, arts, culture and convenient services; everything except an open space park for gatherings, playdates and concerts. In a joint effort to remedy that, the West Seattle Junction Association and the Junction Neighborhood Organization are announcing the Breaking Ground Celebration on the future site of the Junction Plaza Park today, April, 12, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the corner of SW Alaska Street and 42nd Avenue SW, on the site of a former filling station that has been re-mediated over 10-years, with the old tanks removed and the land completely “greened” to remain so in perpetuity. Park completion date is slated for late May 2010.

Junction Plaza Park, designed by landscape architect Karen Kiest, will feature a plaza, complete with brick and concrete seating; a lawn with decorative benches; and a central performance area. All planting will be Northwest natives, including Vine maple, Northwest Flowering dogwood, Oregon grape and Sword fern.

After a large fundraising effort in 2005, with the help of citizens, neighborhood matching funds and the Seattle Pro Parks levy, the site is now owned by the Seattle Parks Department.

The park represents a strong partnership between the West Seattle Junction Association (WSJA) and the Junction Neighborhood Association (JuNO). “This new park will provide opportunities for community gatherings, a place to meet friends, and a place for leisure in the heart of The Junction.  The Junction Association and neighborhood groups have been working towards this goal for almost 10 years and it’s a pleasure to see it underway,” says WSJA Director Susan Melrose. Erica Karlovits, President of JuNO continues, “We are so excited to be able to protect and use the limited green space we have left in our ever growing urban village.  The creation of Junction Plaza Park is an incredible addition to our vibrant community.”

The community is invited to come help beautify the park on Community Planting Day immediately following park completion. Interested parties should contact West Seattle Junction Association Director, Susan Melrose at for more information on participation.

Honk! Fest West This Weekend!

HONK! Fest West is a street fair dedicated to bringing marching bands, samba lines, horn players, drum corps, and every manner of rhythmic and melodic noisemaker right to the Seattle streets. HONK! events are a celebration of the emergence of a new type of street band, one that is typically acoustic and mobile, often politically aware and articulate, and always high spirited. There is a rich community ethic amongst many honkers, who use their music to erode the barriers between professional and novice, and between audience and performers. Although uniforms are sometimes used as a performance tool, individuality is key, and group members often hail from all range of classes, ethnicities, ages, and backgrounds.

This year, over 20 bands large and small (anywhere from 8 – 60 members) will come from all over the United States and Canada, ready with old ditties, new tunes, fighting songs, protest marches, funeral dirges, swinging gospel, Balkan folk, tin pan jazz, and everything in between. The festival is part musical gathering, part community activism.

We hope you come out and join in!Honkfest West

Honk! Fest West will be performing in West Seattle from 12-6 pm Sunday, April 11th, on 7 different stages in The Junction (map).

Sam Cutler is the only man ever to work as tour manager of both the Rolling Stones and Grateful Dead. His new book, You Can’t Always Get What You Want details the author’s experiences with the bands in the late 60’s and early 70’s, including the infamous concert at Altamont. The book also describes in vivid detail the personalities of the bands, friendships with other performers of the day such as Joplin and Hendrix, and the chaotic nature of organizing a concert

These assemblies represent a small portion of my larger Sign Language collection. Each piece is composed of multiple 2″ squares cut from recycled traffic signs. The Five x Five’s are purely abstractions, yet as abstractions they offer many possible stories and interpretations. At their core is the ‘RE’ story—Re-claim, Re-cycle, Re-interpret, Re-examine, and Re-store.John Fleming

Where:  ArtsWest Playhouse and Gallery – 4711 California Avenue SW

Akiko Kino’s atmospheric oil paintings encompass large fields of white with subtle colorful design components. Using a knife instead of a brush, she creates a dimensional surface.  Kino, originally from Japan, works to express ugoki (movement) and nagare (flow) in her paintings inspired by nature and dreams. She graduated from Toita College in Tokyo with a degree in art and was mentored by internationally renowned painter, Masando Kito.

Jane Emens creates a textural surface that includes subtle colors and shapes similar to the surface of Lascaux or a weathered wall.  With yogic focus, Emens works from the inner place of non-rational quiet to find meaning for her creative endeavors and life. She received her MFA in Fiber and Mixed Media Art from JFK University in California.

Maxine Mattson has been painting for over two decades with a focus on colorful abstract encaustic work over the last six years.  Her textured surfaces of layered wax explore the ethereal quality of energy and reflect her interest in representing the passing of time.  A wonderful tension is created from the art’s vibrant colors with natural mixed media objects that emerge from the undulating surfaces.  Mattson’s art has been published, awarded and is collected nationally.
