New Banners in The Junction

Junction Banners

At the beginning of the week, the new Junction street banners were installed. These colorful designs, depicting different scenes from our neighborhood, are an update to the older, faded banners that use to grace our streets well, but were in need of a refresher.

The new banners feature five different designs each keyed into a unique aspect of West Seattle history and life. They are meant to inspire neighborhood pride for all of West Seattle. Design elements include the Alki Lighthouse as a symbol of our strong connection to water, the West Seattle Bridge, a salute to history with the streetcars, our weekly farmers market, and The Junction’s iconic Walk-All-Ways.

Jeff Rodriguez of Horsepower Design (who also creates much of the art, posters, and graphics for The Junction Association) spearheaded the design of the new banners. We think they look great and hope you do too!

We’re on Google+

The West Seattle Junction Association is always looking for ways to better connect with the community and get the information about our great neighborhood out to the public. We love social media for that reason, and have recently created our own Google+ page.

In addition to our Website, Facebook, Twitter, and various other social media sites, our Google+ page offers another way to get in touch with us and find pertinent info about The Junction. Google+ also has a place for visitors to add reviews and comments, so we’re hoping it will be a good landing place for those unfamiliar with The Junction to get an insider perspective on the neighborhood from you, our local experts!

If you have a chance, stop by and check out our new page here. We’d love to hear your feedback and reviews too!

The West Seattle Farmers Market is Growing!

West Seattle Farmers Market

The West Seattle Farmers Market is growing, and this time they are taking it to the streets! The Farmers Market is moving to its new home on California Avenue, between Alaska and Oregon Streets in The Junction starting Sunday, June 14th. This move will allow for more room and an improved layout, while also creating the opportunity to interact more with our local businesses and community.  The June 14th market will kick off this exciting change with some special opening day celebrations, of which we will have more details to share soon.

Also, as a heads up, there will be no parking on California between Alaska and Oregon from 7am-4pm on Sunday, June 14. Any cars parked on California during that time period will be towed, so make sure to plan ahead if you’ll be out late in The Junction on Saturday night and plan to leave your car.

There will also be ample signage during the one-block street closure to direct traffic around The Junction. This should help make the transition smoother for pedestrians and drivers alike.

We hope you’ll join us!

Emerald Water Anglers is taking their Guide Cook-Off to a new level. Join them at Lincoln Park on Saturday, May 30th for this 7th annual event to test some fun products, learn some new skills, and of course–eat some good food.

They have arranged for the Winston, Scott, Hardy, Echo, Patagonia, Bauer, and Nautilus sales reps to all be on hand with the full array of products for people to test cast with. The pro staff and FFF certified casting instructors will also be on hand to provide free casting instruction to anyone who would like to hone their skills a bit before the summer really kicks in.

They will also have a line up of the Epic Glass rods from New Zealand on hand to test cast as well.

The cook-off, for those who haven’t been to it before, features the Emerald Water Anglers staff competing against each other for the best shore lunch they can whip up.  They can spend $40 and have 30 minutes to make enough for 3 people. Current Happenings at ArtsWest

Ken Roux at ArtsWest
Painting by Ken Roux
From May 7th to June 27th, ArtsWest Gallery presents The Moon is Free, a group show featuring five artists exploring the internal logic of abstract painting. The artists include Lydia Bassis, Sue Danielson, Ken DeRoux, Koji Kubota and Junko Yamamoto. There will be a reception and artist talks on Thursday, June 11th from 6-9pm.

“What appeals to me, but can also frustrate me, is the central difficulty of abstraction: that while there may not be any “rules,” each painting develops its own internal logic, which cannot be known when the process begins.”

–Ken DeRoux
