Dine Out for Dakota

Dine out for Dakota West Seattle Junction
Dine Out For Dakota

Save the Date! Dine out for Dakota on December 12th

The Urban Homestead Foundation is partnering with West Seattle restaurants on December 12th for a Dine Out event that will help raise money for the purchase of a property located at 50th and Dakota, across the street from Genesee Hill Elementary school.

This property will be the location of the Dakota Homestead and will be developed into a vibrant corner of sustainable green practices and urban agriculture, providing a place to celebrate our natural resources through demonstration gardens, classes and seasonal events.

The space will also serve as a food hub and seed lending library, connecting neighbors with each other and local farmers. In addition, the land will provide a wild space for schools to use as curriculum enrichment in topics such as edible gardening, urban wildlife, seasonal cooking, crafting and home finances.

Junction restaurants have agreed to donate a portion of food sales towards the purchase of this property during the Dine out for Dakota event from 5 to 8pm on December 12th: Great American Diner and Bar, Falafel Salam, Matador, and (Admiral District) Mission Cantina.  Enjoy a night out and support these local businesses who are helping the Foundation achieve their goal of preserving the Dakota Homestead forever! For more information about the Urban Homestead Foundation or to donate to the cause, please visit their website at: www.urbanhomesteadfoundation.org

Your Voice in the Community

The Junction, Morgan, Admiral, Alki, Delridge & Westwood. Six neighborhoods with six unique challenges? How do we know that for sure? Perhaps we have common challenges and resources we never knew about? As business goes, all merchants in our neighborhoods face unique and common challenges, but have we asked the question what those challenges are? The answer begins with a grant the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce and West Seattle Junction Association received from the Seattle Office of Economic Development to set the foundation for furthering this discussion.

This summer, we hired a communications consultant, Allison Carney to interview 25 key neighborhood members to pose a set of unique questions. Now it’s your turn to review and deepen the discussion in our first neighborhood round table.

All are welcome! You don’t need to be a business owner to attend. In fact, it’s the community that helps us understand more about business in West Seattle. Join the Chamber and Junction at Pershing Hall on October 26th to dig into the results.

Food and refreshments provided! Register here now and join in.

JuNO Needs Your Voice

West Seattle Junction

October 17, 2017 at 6-7:30 p.m.

High Point Community Center

From the Junction Neighborhood Organization (JuNO)

Last May, over 175 of you signed the attached document supporting amending the City’s Comprehensive Plan (Seattle 2035) to remove the single-family areas from the Junction Urban Village boundaries.  This would mean they would not be subject to the upzones proposed by the City as part of HALA/MHA.  The Junction Neighborhood Organization Land Use Committee (JLUC) submitted the proposed amendment, along with all signatures, to the City.  Other neighborhoods also submitted their own amendments.
The City is now holding two workshops at which they will gather additional feedback about the potential amendments to the Comprehensive Plan.  Please consider attending and telling the City that you support an amendment that would remove the existing single-family areas from the boundaries of the Junction Urban VillageJLUC members will be attending to remind the City of our neighborhood’s previously expressed views.
The City is also using the open houses as a means to collect feedback about proposed changes allowing Accessory Dwelling Units on all single-family lots citywide.  Below is a link to further information regarding the Open Houses.

Wine Walk Preview Interview with Three of Cups Winery

Interview with the Winemaker – Lisa Swei from Three of Cups Winery

Maya David

Instagram @GrabSeattle

Three of Cups Winery, from the Artisan Hill area of Woodinville, specializes in premium Washington State wines with an emphasis on Petite Syrah. Three of Cups is run by two winemakers – Lisa Swei and Mike Metheny – both with backgrounds in the Seattle-based tech industry who have been producing and selling artisanal wine since 2013.

After speaking with Swei, it is clear Three of Cups values the mantra that quality wine comes from exceptional fruit – buy only the grape, never the juice. Three of Cups also values the outcome of experimenting with the blending of grapes to produce varietals full of complex flavor. One of those experimentations began with Petite Syrah grapes.

Swei says, “Petite Syrah is a varietal that is an undervalued grape in Washington State. Even though we bought it as a blender, we liked this big wine so much we ended up producing a single varietal and selling out of it in the wine club.” Expect to see big bold reds like this one and the Chariot Red Blend (a blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Syrah) and white wine blends during the Wine Walk.

When asked what wine means to Swei, she brought up human connection. “For me, it’s having people feel good and come together. You always want to share a glass of wine with someone. It gives that human interaction and people are actually talking together, celebrating together.”

Swei’s favorite part of the winemaking process is meeting new customers and educating them about wine: introducing someone to a new wine, seeing their reaction and how their palette changes with different wines. “Trying wine is as simple as: you either like it or you don’t.”

On advice for new tasters during the upcoming Wine Walk or someone new to wine, “Don’t limit yourself to just reds or whites and try different things you normally wouldn’t try. Break that barrier and try something different. If you don’t like it, you can always spit it out.”

Three of Cups Winery will be pouring tastes at the Virago Art Gallery on Alaska Street during the Wine Walk on September 28th from 6-9pm.
