Sidewalk Sale and Record Store Day in the Junction – Saturday, August 29th 7 AM (Record Store Day starts) and Noon (Sidewalk Sales begin)
Shopping at Summer Fest is one of the many reasons people from all around the region visit West Seattle over the 3-day festival. We were not able to present the festival this year, but that’s not going to stop the Junction from celebrating the origin of Summer Fest – the West Seattle Festival! Summer Fest started as a merchant sidewalk sale 37 years ago (and beyond) with many of the West Seattle businesses still holding that tradition true by offering sidewalk sales throughout Summer Fest.
Join the Junction businesses (outside w/masks on), on Saturday, August 29th for a sidewalk sale Noon to 4 PM. The merchants have been saving their best deals since February for you.
Kicking off the Sidewalk Sale at 7 AM is the equally famous Record Store Day at Easy Street Records sale – there’s always plenty of deals for everyone!
We’ll be adding more businesses as we get closer to the Sidewalk Sale. Make sure you check out all the Sidewalk Sale merchants for deep discounts:

More than 6,800 friends and defenders of West Seattle voted on their favorite designs, from among 63 entries, and the top three designs are now ready to go into production.

Mind the Gap – $29 100% Bella+Canvas ringspun cotton/pre-shrunk
“With a nod to the Brit catchphrase, this design was originally conceived as a limited-run sticker design of 100, just for personal fun. So Close Yet So Far – $29 Next Level 100% ringspun cotton/pre-shrunk
“My brother lives downtown and by crow, we’re only 2.5 miles apart and what was usually only a 10-minute drive is now 25 without traffic. So close yet so far. But it’s okay – the peninsula has plenty to do here so we don’t really notice so much. My husband and I moved here three years ago this spring. I designed this reflecting on the luck we’ve had to live and find community in West Seattle just by random chance. I’m originally from rural Minnesota and my husband is from East Dallas and we met while living in Chicago. We knew we wanted to move west and West Seattle is the place we share together, home for both of us (and our two pups). We can find tacos as good as he grew up on in Texas, and the water and nature all around fills me with a sense of home (but even better). I could go on and on but I actually prefer keeping how great it is a secret so no one else comes here. Even though I know we are people who came here. Thank you to everyone who has made West Seattle feel like home.” Available in mens, womens and youth sizes. See more views and the size charts here. Ready to order? Click the green button.
What we at the Junction love about these designs is how they reflect the broad range of emotions we are all feeling about the Bridge, each with its own graphic twist. Order the one that best matches where you are! See more views and the size charts here.

Stories have been the cornerstone of my life for 30+ years … as a news reporter for the Los Angeles Times and United Press International, as a field producer and scriptwriter for KCBS-TV, as a public relations manager, and as a successful book publisher. In my professional capacity, I have reported on, written about, and worked with people at their best and also at their most vulnerable. We’re all connected in some way, united (even more so now) on the West Seattle peninsula.
Your downtown wants to make sure everyone in West Seattle knows all about the great gems that make our neighborhood an amazing place to call home. You don’t have to cross the bridge (well…) to experience the best that Seattle has to offer – we have it right here. We’re reaching out to the community to spread the word in many ways:
We’ll be TALKING about the importance of local businesses and the role they play in our community.
We’ll be PLAYING in our community through the Junction BINGO games (more details below).
And we’ll be APPEALING to the neighborhood to shop at local businesses to help West Seattle thrive.
Our local business flavor is a big part of what we love about the neighborhood. West Seattle is awesome because whether you’re talking about cool shops, the best ice cream, stellar restaurants, people who care, the walk-all-ways intersection, or the best sunsets in Seattle, we can all say, West Seattle – WE HAVE THAT!
Show your neighborhood pride the next time you visit a local Junction business (masks on please!) by finding and writing on a We Have That card what you purchased. The business will be proudly displaying your message. You can also share photos by posting on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook and using the hashtag #wswehavethat #westseattlejunction. We’d love to see what you see, experience, and purchase in West Seattle because West Seattle – WE HAVE THAT! In the spirit of WE HAVE THAT, we’re also rolling out a BINGO game to not only show you we really do have that, but also to spin in some fun.
Vote for your top five designs! Powered by your votes, three designs will be produced into West Seattle Bridge T-Shirts available for pre-sale, and at local West Seattle retailers. BE the voice of West Seattle, and show your community pride. You’ll be voting alongside your 80,000 West Seattle island neighbors. We’re on island time now, so take your time – the voting ends July 31st.
This is a historically remarkable time for West Seattle. The stay-home order is dramatically affecting our merchants and the bridge closure is intensifying our sense of isolation. We love living here, but we are getting hit harder than most neighborhoods. It’s been tough on everyone.
Art as an Expression of Solidarity
At the initiative of neighbor and volunteer Scott Ulrich, the West Seattle Art Walk is bringing artists and the community together to create a visual, emotional statement about our reality – as a benefit for our local businesses and local artists.
We are launching a West Seattle Bridge T-Shirt Design Contest to generate three different shirt designs for sale this summer. The artists of the three chosen designs will each receive $500 for their work.
All proceeds of the T-shirt sales will go toward the merchants who will be selling the t-shirts at their stores and to the West Seattle Junction who organizes the West Seattle Small Business Relief fund which, as of June 16, has already provided $104,000 to our local merchants and service providers to help cover essential monthly expenses like utility bills and payroll taxes.
Inspiration for the T-Shirt Artwork
The Art Walk’s goal is to create T-shirts with visual and/or verbal messages that inspire West Seattleites during this heavy time in our history. We would like all artists to consider the following as they create their designs:
Capture the essence of the situation
Raise awareness about the importance of the bridge closure to our community
Convey the love we have for West Seattle
We recognize that art is a very personal expression and you may have mixed emotions about the Bridge closure. While we do not want to inhibit creativity, we do aim to find a balance among sentiments conveyed in the designs that will appeal to our community, with a suggestion of:
Designs can be all illustration, all text, or a mix of both. One submission per artist.
Please note: While we welcome all submissions, artwork needs to be family-friendly to qualify for voting and selection.
West Seattle Chooses Winners!
All submissions are due on Friday, July 3, by noon (see below for more info about art preparation). The Art Walk will compile all qualifying submissions in a Facebook album and provide an online voting form – then it’s up to the community to vote for their favorites! Timeline specifics will be released shortly.
T-shirt designs will be silk screened and can have up to four (4) solid/spot/flat colors (PMS colors preferred)

>>>How do I submit my artwork?Fill out this short form online, where you can also upload your work. We need both the final file and a JPG for use in voting.
Here is the 2019 Summer Fest T-shirt for reference. The four colors are black, pink, red and yellow.

For 38 years, the biggest festival in West Seattle has continued to evolve, starting out as the Sidewalk Sale, then the Street Fair, and now Summer Fest – it’s been a three-day celebration in the West Seattle streets and a tradition for many families.
The festival has been a July tradition in West Seattle since 1982, the same year Seattle became the Emerald City. Even prior to the West Seattle bridge being built (but that’s another story…).
After much discussion, the Junction has made the safest decision for the community – to cancel the 2020 Summer Fest – July 10-12th.
We are saddened but hopeful we will rise like a Westside phoenix to bring back Summer Fest stronger than ever July 2021.
In the meantime, we’re developing a plan for a block party-style community gathering that will be announced as soon as we’re confident it’s safe to bring people together. Current events and info from King Co Public Health give us hope for a late August date.
We’ll continue to monitor all health regulations and sincerely hope the Junction merchants can show appreciation of the outpouring of community support by bringing you one day that celebrates all the West Seattle goodness we’ve stored up through this pandemic.
While the vendors at Summer Fest can’t be with you on the streets, they can be with you virtually. Shop the vendors here, thanks for supporting them. We’ll see you in July 2021.
On California Ave in the Junction – June 27th and 28th
We need love and support more than ever. Show your pride by adopting a rainbow flag to fly the weekend of June 27th and 28th. Support love for all by adopting a 3′ x 5′ rainbow flag! Even though Pride Parade is cancelled, we can still show our support for all humankind.
In 2019 there was an outpouring of love, so show support again in 2020. We’ll be proudly flying 60 rainbow flags all along California Ave!
It’s an exciting and supportive project and we want you to be a part of the party. The rainbow flag program is a fundraiser for the West Seattle Junction, a nonprofit serving your community.
All 60 flags have been adopted!
Join the 2020 Rainbow adoptors here and thanks for supporting the LGBTQ community and all humankind
