Here’s the Plan for Summer Fest

For 39 years, the biggest festival in West Seattle has continued to evolve, starting out as the Sidewalk Sale, then the Street Fair, and now Summer Fest – it’s been a three-day celebration in the West Seattle streets and a tradition for many families.

The festival has been a July tradition in West Seattle since 1982, the same year Seattle became the Emerald City. Even prior to the West Seattle bridge being built (but that’s another story…).

After much discussion, the Junction has made the safest decision for the community (for the second year in a row), to cancel the in-person 2021 Summer Festival – July 9-11th. Bringing 35,000 of our favorite community members together isn’t safe, but that doesn’t mean the heart of Summer Fest and the Sidewalk Sale will be forgotten.

Leaning into the roots of Summer Fest, which actually started in 1982 as the Sidewalk Sale, we’re going back to the deep West Seattle beginnings as the foundation of this year’s festival. The old guard West Seattleites will remember merchants merrily filling tables loaded down with deep discounts and one-of-a-kind treasures on tables lining the streets.

This year we’ll go way back to the 80’s bringing back the Sidewalk Sales (no street closures) July 9 and 10, lining California Ave with goods from the merchants, plus local and handmade artisans.

We’ll continue to monitor all health regulations and sincerely hope the Junction merchants can show appreciation of the outpouring of community support by bringing you a combination of the good ol’ fashioned roots of the festival – The Sidewalk Sale – along with the popular boxes and tote bags full of Summer Fest feelings. There’s going to be plenty of ways to celebrate all the West Seattle goodness we’ve stored up through this pandemic.

We are planning (and hopeful) we will rise like a vaccinated Westside phoenix to bring back Summer Fest stronger than ever July 15th – 17th, 2022 (this being the 40 year anniversary too!).

Here’s the schedule of events:

July 8th Paint and Sip Art Walk night – virtual
July 9th and 10th sidewalk sale (no street closure)
July 9th Music Trivia Night w/Pegasus Books (with a band set)
July 10th Mayoral Virtual Town Hall – moderated by the West Seattle Blog
July 10th Beer Tasting (w/kettle corn, meat, cheese) – virtual (with a band set)
Kids Summer Fest craft and summer box

Boxes, totes, and tickets for the trivia night all go on sale Tuesday, May 11th at 4 PM. Watch here or sign up for the Junction newsletter.

Are you a business that would like to hear about the sponsorship opportunities for Summer Fest? The Junction will gladly send you an email with all of the details. Email us the request here Deadline to sponsor is Monday, May 17th.

On California Ave in the Junction – June 26th and 27th

We need love and support more than ever. Show your pride and love for all by adopting a beautiful 3′ x 5′ rainbow flag to fly the weekend of June 26th and 27th. Even though Pride is still up in the air due to the pandemic, we can still show our support for all humankind.

This project was started in 2019, and due to the outpouring of love, the Junction has now adopted this programming into part of the yearly events.  In 2021, you’ll be proudly flying your 60 rainbow flags all along California Ave!

It’s an exciting and supportive project and we want you to be a part of the party. The rainbow flag program is a fundraiser for the West Seattle Junction, a nonprofit serving your community.

See the rainbow flag volunteer opportunities here!

Thank you to everyone who adopted one of the 60 flags. All of the flags have been adopted.

Parking in the West Seattle Junction

West Seattle Junction Reimagines Parking

Photo: West Seattle Blog

With density comes a modern way to address parking in the heart of West Seattle

For over 30 years the West Seattle Junction merchants have paid for the ‘free’ parking lots in the heart of West Seattle. A benefit that has been shared with the community, will be turning a new chapter in the parking lot book in 2021.

“We live in a world where the definition of transportation has changed since the 1970s. People have the power to get around West Seattle in different ways.” Says Lora Radford, West Seattle Junction Executive Director.

In partnership with Diamond Parking, who has been working with the Junction since 1997, the merchant-funded parking spaces will be upgraded to pay parking on January 15th, 2021. The change comes at a time where the Junction has been shouldering the full cost of rapidly increasing taxes that has become unsustainable. 100% of the Junction’s portion of the revenue from the paid parking will be applied to the tax burden, lessening the amount due but by no means paying for the entire obligation.

The idea of maintaining free parking in an urban village like the Junction (the last in the City of Seattle), is no surprise for the residents. In early 2019 the Junction conducted a community survey (through a grant), that underscored the sentiment free parking was an anomaly in a rapidly growing city.

Especially in this time, the Junction has asked the community to include the support of small businesses in their daily lives. The request for West Seattleites to pay a modest $2 to $3 per hour (the cost of a greeting card, cup of coffee, or craft beer) to preserve the economic vibrancy of their downtown should be a simple request.

“For many, experiencing the downtown of West Seattle will become easier”. Continues Radford. “The ability to find parking each time you visit the Junction will increase dramatically with the movement into paid parking. Gone will be the days of cars parked in the lots for hours at a time”.

Parking Map

The experiences of West Seattleites are a true reflection of who they are and what they care about, and visiting the Junction is one of the most vivid examples of normalcy in a far-from-normal world. For some, a trip to the West Seattle Junction is, in itself, the only and best destination. People can feel the heartbeat of some of the best small businesses through a perfectly scooped ice cream, to the bite of a tangy piece of pizza, or through quirky items found at local independent shops. They can reflect on collections of cultural significance through the murals or take a stroll under the flower baskets heavy with summer blooms.

Luckily for them, the Junction can continue to offer an avenue to attract those uniquely Northwest experiences in West Seattle.

The Junction strongly believes in the continued community benefit provided to the West Seattle residents.  We believe the West Seattle Junction is the core of West Seattle where neighbors come together to meet which promotes community openness and a sense of place. The wellbeing of West Seattle will continue through the ease of parking close to the very heart of our community through a new and modern version of history.

West Seattle is represented as a whole by the West Seattle Junction Association (WSJA), a non-profit 501(c)(3). The mission of the WSJA is to develop, encourage, promote, and participate in activities that enhance a healthy economic, social, and physical environment for the West Seattle Junction community and those who visit. Junction businesses, from specialty shops to small retail chains, are supported broadly in their outreach efforts to attract shoppers for recreational, dining, and retail needs. Community members also benefit from WSJA programs that promote safety and maintenance of the area, beautification, engagement opportunities, and public events.

Parking FAQ’s

What is the cost to park in the former ‘free’ parking lots? The Junction understands that transitioning from 100% merchant-funded parking to paid parking is a big change, so we’ve set the rates far below market value.

2 – 3  HRS $4.00

3 – 4  HRS $6.00

4 – 10 HRS $10.00

Year End Giving to the Small Business Relief Fund

End 2020 knowing you gave Small Businesses HOPE

We all know what makes West Seattle special. It’s the small-town feel. It’s your favorite deli that knows your favorite ice cream or a boutique that pings you when your favorite item has arrived.

Our businesses run on the passion and dedication of individuals like these owners. Without them, all of our lives would have changed – but most critically, those individuals who work to keep the entrepreneurial engines going. To make this relief fund count, West Seattle stepped up donating over $123,000 directly to small businesses throughout West Seattle.

The Small Business Relief Fund is still going strong, you can make a donation through the Junction (501c3) directly to your favorite business or to the Junction fund where the money is used for special programs and grants that support the small business engine. It’s kind of a perfect note to end the year.

Donations can be made via the Small Business Relief Fund form below. If you would like to donate to more than one business (many people have!), note the business name and amounts in the additional comments.
